NDP confirm support for federal budget

Canada’s NDP leader confirms his party will vote in favour of the Liberals’ latest budget.

Jagmeet Singh has raised several concerns about the budget since it was introduced on April 18.

That includes what he sees as a lack of funding for the new disability benefit and Indigenous communities.

“I’ve received openness to responding to concerns I’ve raised and now we’re going to hold them to account,” Singh told reporters on Wednesday afternoon.

The NDP leader would not say whether he received any guarantees that his concerns would be addressed.

Despite his party’s concerns, Singh said there are a lot of good aspects to the budget.

“We’re getting dental care, pharmacare, a school food program, a protection fund for renters. These are things that would have never been in the budget but for us,” he said.

The Liberals needed the support of at least one other party to pass the budget. The Conservatives and Bloc Quebecois have said they would not support it.

An ongoing agreement sees the New Democrats support the Liberals on confidence votes, such as the budget, in exchange for action on key policies.
