A company from Emo is this year’s first prize winner of the Pitch-it contest.
Entrepreneur’s from the Kenora and Rainy River Districts are invited to “pitch” their unique business ideas.
Dan Agombar claimed the first prize of five thousand dollars for his idea of producing mulch.
“Our biggest savings will be on the trucking on a lot of stuff, because a lot of it is coming from Toronto and Winnipeg adding significant trucking costs,” Agombar told a panel of three judges in the Pitch-It competition.
The second place prize of three thousand dollars went to Hannah Rose of Kenora for the Bread and Butter Company.
“We need to purchase our steam oven and our mixer. We’re continuing with markets. Soon we’ll be selling from our home on a frequent basis and hopefully moving into some stores.”
The people choice award for $2,000 went to Shauna Thain from Ear Falls for you pick flowers.
She says her and her partner purchased 84 acres of vacant land near Vermilion Bay for their operation.
“Once fully operational the homestead will have multiple income streams. The you-pick flowers, produce sales. I also have a worm farm for worm-castings sales. By starting small and focusing on one area at a time, we’ll be able to scale our operations.”
Other finalists for the Pitch-It competition were Josh Hernandez from Kenoride and Inam Rishan with Woblu.
