Emergency Preparedness Week in Canada

By Regis Phillips May 7, 2024 | 12:05 PM

“Be Prepared. Know your Risks.” That’s the theme for Canada’s 29th edition of Emergency Preparedness Week.

Emergency Preparedness Minister Harjit Sajjan encourages Canadians to learn about the disaster risks that could affect their community and how to prepare themselves, their families, and their homes.

“When an emergency strikes, we have our first responders and emergency management professionals to thank for their prompt action, expertise, and bravery,” said Sajjan.

“We recognize and celebrate the incredible work they do and I am personally appreciative for their service, and for keeping our communities safe.”

Government officials say climate change continues to impact our communities directly.

The increase in frequency and severity of flooding, wildfires, winter storms, heat waves and hurricanes is more important than ever to increase our preparedness.

An important step that everyone can take is to assemble emergency kits and create a household emergency plan.

Public Safety Canada is also launching social media challenges to win an emergency preparedness kit.
