The Town of Sioux Lookout is hoping for a closer relationship with the Independent First Nation Alliance.

The two organizations have signed a Memorandum of Understanding in regards to fires.

Fire Chief of Sioux Lookout Jeremy Funk says this is a partnership with IFNA and it really goes both ways.

“The main focus on this is on the fire fighter training, but we have had some preliminary discussions about support of resources in times of need going both ways,” explains Funk.

“The IFNA program does some very interesting things with unmanned aircraft and drones and they use it very successfully in some of their operations.”

Funk adds the MOU just recognizes what they have been doing with IFNA for the past couple of years.

“We have a long-standing relationship with both IFNA and some of their communities.  Lac Seul, as an example, is a neighboring community.  The MOU just really formalized everything.  Giving it a little bit of structure so it’s not just myself as fire chief talking their fire chief.  We know we have the support of their organization now and they have the support of the municipality.”

The town says the MOU outlines how the two organizations can work together for their advancement and betterment when it comes to fire-related activities and reduction of fire-related fatalities.
