The mayors of Dryden and Ignace are back from Toronto after a quick trip this week.

Jack Harrison says he and Kim Baigrie met with Greg Rickford in his capacity as Minister of Northern Development,

“It was a good opportunity for us just to talk about potential economic opportunities that may be coming through our area, and just being prepared if those happen and how that might impact our community,” Harrison told Dryden city council Monday night.

Baigrie says in particular they wanted to update the ministers on the proposal for an underground nuclear repository.

“They were very productive meetings, and it was important for the Township to continue to meet face-to-face with some of the Provincial Cabinet’s most influential Ministers,” stated Mayor Kim Baigrie.

“(It was) another important step in updating the Provincial government. We will require both of their ongoing support and dedication to this important project, if indeed we become a potential and willing host community for the NWMO project”.

She says the meetings also acted a chance to advance local infrastructure and community priorities such as healthcare access, infrastructure replacement and highway transportation for Northwestern Ontario.
