Forest Fire season is off to a good start in Northwestern Ontario with few fires to worry about so far.

Ministry of Natural Resources Fire Information Officer Chris Marchand explains the rain has been a big help.

“Both the amount of precipitation as well the frequency of the rainfall events, and how they have spaced themselves out across the region, that’s really resulted in both the lower number of expected forest fires and hectares burned so far this season,” explains Marchand.

Marchand adds there is really no comparison to last years start to the fire season.

“The fires have just burned 52 hectares, and those are fairly low numbers when you compare that last season that claimed over 23,000 hectares.”

Marchand added that so far this season we have had 37 Fires down from 127 for the same period last year.

So far this week, there have been no new fires in northwestern Ontario.
