A new stamp is unveiled in Thunder Bay to honour Josephine Mandamin.

For the third consecutive year, Canada Post is celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day by creating three stamps to honour Indigenous leaders.

The stamps feature Elisapie, Josephine Mandamin and Christi Belcourt.

They have been chosen as Indigenous leaders who have dedicated their lives to preserving their culture and improving the quality of life of Indigenous Peoples in Canada. Each stamp is to be unveiled at separate events in Ontario and Quebec.

Mandamin’s stamp was unveiled at Prince Arthur’s Landing with an event that took place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The event included a pipe ceremony and water ceremony, followed by a performance from Algonquin Avenue Public School’s Native Language Choir.

As a residential school survivor, Mandamin was an Anishinaabe Elder and water-right activist. She co-founded the Mother Earth Water Walk movement to draw attention to the pollution and degradation of the Great Lakes and on First Nations reserves across the country. She passed on in 2019.

The new stamp will be available at canadapost.ca and postal outlets across Canada starting June 21.
