Women’s hockey supporters threaten legal action against city

The city of Kenora is being threatened with legal action.

A group of women associated with the Kenora Women’s Hockey League is calling on the city to make its ice time allocation policy more equitable.

The league was reduced to two hours following the implementation of a new policy.

The women call it discriminatory and are prepared to take the issue to court.

Adult men’s hockey leagues and teams have a combined 31 hours.

The hours for women’s hockey are both after 10 p.m.

The women argue that makes it unusable and exclusionary for women, who carry disproportionate burdens in the home and for the care of children.

They are giving the city until the end of the month to respond to their demand.

They have enlisted the help of the Fort Frances law firm of Judson Howie.
