Canada and India expel diplomats over allegations on assassination

Tensions between Canada and India have reached a critical point, leading to the expulsion of key diplomats from both nations.

The expulsions follow serious allegations concerning the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent Sikh separatist leader which took place in Surrey, British Columbia.

Canada has expelled six Indian diplomats, including High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma, linking them to the murder of Nijjar.

The Canadian government alleges a broader campaign by Indian agents targeting dissidents in Canada.

In retaliation, India ordered the expulsion of six Canadian diplomats, including the acting high commissioner, and announced the withdrawal of its envoy from Canada.

This diplomatic conflict marks a significant downturn in relations between the two Commonwealth countries, which have been strained since Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau revealed evidence connecting Indian agents to Nijjar’s assassination on Canadian soil. Trudeau stated that there is “clear and compelling evidence” of Indian government involvement in activities that threaten public safety in Canada.
