Canada Carbon rebate boost for rural residents

By Tara Clow Oct 15, 2024 | 11:32 AM

Carbon rebate payments went out today and rural residents are getting a bit of a bonus.

Whether you are receiving your rebate via direct deposit or a cheque in the mail, rural residents are getting a one-time top-up.

In Budget 2024, the government of Canada promised an increase from 10 per cent to 20 because those living in rural areas and smaller communities often drive longer distances and have higher energy needs.

With the delayed passage of the budget, rural residents will receive a retroactive 20 per cent payment for the months of April and July.

The rural top-up applies to residents of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia whose primary residence is outsideĀ a Census Metropolitan Area, as designated by Statistics Canada. All rebate recipients of Prince Edward Island are eligible for the rural supplement, and it is already included in their base amount.
