Liberal Leader Susan Holt celebrated a convincing majority victory in the New Brunswick provincial election on Monday night. Holt, who is set to become the province’s first female premier, led her party to capture 31 seats, surpassing the 25 needed for a majority.
Outgoing Premier Blaine Higgs and his Progressive Conservatives saw their representation drop from 25 to 16 seats.
Notably, Higgs lost his own seat in Quispamsis to Liberal candidate Aaron Kennedy by 200 votes, marking the end of his five-year term.
Holt emphasized the need for change, stating that New Brunswickers have placed their trust in her and her team.
Her campaign focused on key issues like health care and affordability, with plans to deliver fiscal responsibility while enhancing essential services.
Voter turnout for the election was around 66 percent, with the Liberals receiving 48 percent of the overall vote.
Holt is expected to be sworn in as premier later this week.
