The provincial government is making several legislative changes to expand the recognition of military veterans.
It includes a new award that will honour them for their contributions to their communities.
The province is partnering with the Royal Canadian Legion Ontario Provincial Command on the award.
Vice-president of the Legion’s Ontario Provincial Command Lynne McClelland welcomes its creation.
“The Legion branches of Ontario Command are excited to be working with the government of Ontario recognizing veterans who were willing to sacrifice their lives to protect ours, and to this day continue to volunteer their services throughout their communities,” says McClelland.
He adds there are thousands of veterans living in Ontario who have served in more recent wars or conflicts, peacekeeping missions or as reservists.
While many have not joined the Legion, McClelland says they must be recognized for their service and volunteerism in their communities.
The government also announced that proposed legislation will condemn acts that misrepresent veterans.
Acting Citizenship and Multiculturalism Minister Graham McGregor says veterans deserve our respect.
“That is why our government will always condemn those who falsely seek recognition by wearing uniforms, medals, or decorations to which they are not entitled. Not only is this a serious offence punishable under law, but it detracts from the honour of those who actively serve the country,” says McGregor.
The legislation also proposes to rename Remembrance Week as Remembrance Day and Veterans’ Week.
It will also include suggestions for ways the public can honour veterans during this week.
