Susan Holt officially became the first female premier of New Brunswick over the weekend.
Several former MLAs attended the swearing-in ceremony on Saturday, including former cabinet ministers who served under outgoing premier Blaine Higgs.
Holt says she wouldn’t be here without them, because they helped pave the way for her.
“Every single one of them that got elected made it a little bit easier for the next of us to get here,” she said.
“I wanted to make sure that they had an opportunity to be a part of the day, because I think it’s something that many of them have wished for for longer than I have.”
Holt and the Liberal Party won the Oct. 21 election with 31 seats. The Progressive Conservatives had 16 seats, and the Greens had two.
It’s a dream come true to serve the province, Holt said. Since she learned she won the position, it has been the best days of her life, she said.
Holt said it was humbling to be in the legislature, surrounded by people who lead the province before her government, but looking at the faces of her team, she said she felt a great sense of pride that they’re ready to help make life better for New Brunswickers.
They picked her party, she said, because they want people in the province to come together.
“We are not a divided province. They saw our message of positivity and of hope and a really balanced approach to deliver a fiscally responsible government that’s going to improve health care services.”
