Walmart is making changes to its store in Halifax after the tragic death of an employee.
The remains of 19-year-old Gursimran Kaur were discovered inside the walk-in oven of the bakery section of the Mumford Road store on October 19.
The store has been closed ever since as investigations took place into the circumstances surrounding her death.
Walmart spokesperson Amanda Moss tells us they are in the process of taking out the oven at the store.
“Now that the stop work order has been lifted by the Department of Labour, the oven will be removed from this store and will no longer be used.” said Moss.
The labour department lifted its stop work order on October 29.
“The stop work order was lifted when compliance was confirmed, allowing bakery operations to safely resume should Walmart decide to do so. The stop work order did not prohibit the store from being open – the order applied to the bakery and one piece of equipment.”
Police are still investigating Kaur’s death, an immigrant from India, but have yet to reveal if it is suspicious or criminal in nature.
The time it is taking for answers has led to unrest in the community and calls for an update from police.
More than 100 people attended a candlelight vigil for Kaur outside the Walmart on Sunday night.
The Maritime Sikh Society organized a fundraiser to help bring Kaur’s family to Canada. It brought in $190,000 in a matter of hours as donations poured in from around the world.
The teens remains were discovered by her mother, who also works at the same Walmart.
“This is an extremely sad and difficult situation.” added Moss.
The company is paying its staff while the store is closed and they are missing shifts.
Walmart has not given any indication of when they would re-open the store.
