Confederation College has opened an Indigenous Gathering Outdoor Space.
The space is called Anwebiiwining, “a place where you rest” in Anishinaabemowin, and will provide an accessible and versatile outdoor space for sharing and learning.
It is located on the Thunder Bay campus and will serve as a hub for cultural celebrations, outdoor study, lectures, and community gatherings.
“Anwebiiwining represents our ongoing dedication to creating inclusive spaces that celebrate Indigenous culture and knowledge,” said President, Michelle Salo. “This gathering space is not just a physical location; it is a symbol of our commitment to reconciliation and our respect for Indigenous traditions.”
The new space features a circular gathering area symbolizing unity and equality, natural landscaping that respects and honours the land, and accessible pathways that ensure inclusivity for all community members, along with areas for traditional ceremonies and teachings.
The space is fully lit, electrified, and has internet access, allowing students at the College’s seven regional campuses to participate remotely in events and classes.
Vice President of Indigenous Leadership, Partnership and Strategy, Wendy Landry emphasized the significance. “Anwebiiwining provides a dedicated space for students, staff, and community members to connect with their culture and share their traditions with others. It’s a place of learning, reflecting, healing, and coming together.”
Confederation College is inviting the community to visit Anwebiiwining to experience the unique space.
