The MP for Thunder Bay-Rainy River is not surprised by the resignation of Justin Trudeau as Liberal leader.

Marcus Powlowski says the decline in public support and dissent within the party were factors.

He feels Trudeau had no choice, especially when former Finance Minister Christia Freeland stepped down last month.

“I think with Christia resigning the way she did, I think it was kind of the straw that broke the camel’s back. I don’t think the Prime Minister had any other cards left to play. I don’t think he really had much of another option other than to have stepped down,” says Powlowski.

The Liberal MP is expecting an early election as a result.

Powlowski is confident the Liberals will be able to rebound by the time that happens.

“The Liberal Party is the de facto party for most Canadians. I think as a country, most Canadians are kind of centrist, maybe a little leaning to the left. I think that’s why historically, the Liberals have done so well.”

“I think in recent years we’ve drifted a little too far to the left. I think there is this great thirst in this country for regaining the middle ground. I think a lot of us are tired of the far right and the far left, and we want the political middle ground.”

Powlowski also sees the new Liberal getting a lot of attention which could hold in the party’s favour should the opposition force one with a confidence motion.

While Parliament is prorogued, Powlowski says his work within the riding will continue until an election is called.
