FASD Awareness Day stretches into a week-long event

Fetal Alcohol Awareness Day is being turned into a week-long event.

The Kenora Chiefs Advisory, FIREFLY and other agencies are working together on an awareness campaign.

Spokesperson for KCA, Braiden Leishow says FASD was actually on Monday) but they want to raise the profile of the issue.

“Kenora Chiefs Advisory has teamed up with FIREFLY and we’ve created a photo contest with some very special animal friends of ours,” explains Leishow.

“The purpose of this is to get folks out into the community and talking about FASD.”

People are encouraged to take selfies with posters of Rosey the Bear and Gerald the goose and submit their photos to win a prize.

Posters have been placed in Kenora, Dryden, Fort Frances, Atikokan, Thunder Bay, Red Lake and Sioux Lookout.

Leishow adds that they actually have a number of other events planned for this week.

“We will be down at the Farmer’s Market serving up some delicious mocktails for everybody to come by and enjoy as well as having some great conversation”.

As part of International FASD Awareness Day, Red Lake also held a Red Shoes Rock walk on Monday.

The event has been held on FASD Awareness Day for the past 25 years.
