The community of Sandy Lake First Nation is in mourning over the loss of Chief Delores Kakegamic’s son.

He was found dead Wednesday night in the water near the family’s dock.

The chief and her family, including her husband, Councillor Russell Kakepetum, were away on a trip in Regina, healing from the passing of their daughter two months ago.

Their son, Trent Kakepetum, returned to the community on Monday, prior to his passing.

The coroner’s office and investigators are expected to arrive in the community Thursday afternoon.

The community was made aware of his passing through an announcement on Sandy Lake First Nation radio.

In a post on Facebook, a member of the community asked for prayers for the family.
