New stamps to reflect Canada’s residential schools

By Randy Thoms Sep 23, 2024 | 6:05 PM

New stamps are being issued by Canada Post to reflect the history and legacy of Canada’s residential school system.

The stamps were created to commemorate the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation which is on September 30th.

Canada Post says it worked with the Survivors Circle of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation in the selection of the artwork.

The three artists involved are residential school survivors.

Robert Burke’s artwork explores the social issues and personal challenges of his Black Indigenous identity, as well as what he experienced in nearly a decade spent at St. Joseph’s Residential School in the Northwest Territories.

The artwork Inuk artist Helen Iguptak depicts a doll she learned to make while living at Turquetil Hall in Nunavut.

Two-Spirit interdisciplinary artist Adrian Stimson attended three residential schools, including Gordon’s Residential School in Saskatchewan.

The stamps will be available to the public this Friday.
