The provincial police are launching a new initiative aimed at supporting the victims of crime.

Footprints Northwest will provide culturally sensitive training to children, youth, and educators in Red Lake, Kenora, Dryden, Sioux Lookout, and Fort Frances.

“The Footprints Northwest Project brings together victim-centred resources from around the Northwest Region into a collaborative hub,” explained OPP North West Regional Headquarters Inspector Ben Curtis. “Individually, the organizations involved touch the lives of victims in each community every day, this funding creates a coalition that will have a profound and positive impact on people at their most vulnerable moment, immediately and for years to come.”

The Footprints Fund is attached to the project and aims to empower survivors of intimate partner violence by providing them with the financial means to leave abusive situations and establish safety and independence.

The fund would address the long-term needs of survivors.

Police have partnered with women’s shelters in the communities getting the initiative.

The shelters will manage the grant funding for both the educational and operational aspects of the project.
