Keewatin-Patricia School Board provides update on data breach

By Evan Taylor Jan 15, 2025 | 4:45 AM

The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board (KPDSB) has provided an update regarding a cyber incident involving PowerSchool, which took place between December 22 and 28, 2024.

PowerSchool, a widely used application for storing student information, notified KPDSB and other school boards across Ontario and North America of a data breach on January 7, 2025.

KPDSB’s ongoing investigation suggests that the breach could affect data dating back to 2015, potentially impacting students, their families, and staff. In response, KPDSB has created a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page on its website, detailing the breach, the types of data involved, and steps individuals can take to protect themselves. The FAQ will be updated as new information becomes available.

Staff and families are advised to monitor email and online accounts, update passwords regularly, and exercise caution with unfamiliar emails or messages. It is recommended to avoid clicking on suspicious links or sharing personal information without verification.

KPDSB is working with PowerSchool to gather further details and address the situation. Additional updates will be provided as the investigation continues. For questions related to the data breach, individuals can contact KPDSB at [email protected].
