A couple of projects in the region are receiving some funding to help protect against invasive species.

The Invasive Species Centre is delivering the funds following an investment by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources.

“The Invasive Species Centre is pleased to support on-the-ground action by communities to reduce the spread of invasive species which impact parks, forests, and lakes in Ontario,” says the centre’s Executive Director Sarah Rang. “The goal of these community-led efforts is long-term positive changes on the landscape that reduce the impacts of invasive species on natural spaces and Ontario’s economy.”

The centre provided funding to a total of 61 projects this year including two in northwestern Ontario.

The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority is receiving $2,500 to identify and map invasive narrow-leaved Cattail Stands within Hurkett Cove. The cattails can take over wetlands, spreading quickly and crowding out native species.

Lake of the Woods District Stewardship Association is receiving $2,498 to create an outreach team called LakeSmart. The team will be made up of post-secondary students who will conduct education and community outreach on invasive species.

The Invasive Species Centre has funded 257 projects since 2021 that help protect natural spaces from the impacts of invasive species.
